Model Flying

I first met Dave when we used to fly radio controlled model gliders.

There were the three Daves, Dave White, Dave Johnson and Dave Edworthy (me).

I remember once we were all up at Butts Hill and Dave (Johnson) had a new scale model glider of around 7ft wingspan and very nice it was too. He flew it successfully for a while and then came round behind for a landing. This was aborted because there were people on the path so the procedure was to go forward again and come round for another try.

Unfortunately he was close to the ground and there was a wire fence directly in front. These fences consisted of a lower section of square mesh with one or two single horizontal wires above. Dave decided he could not clear the fence so would fly the model between the horizontal wires! He ended up flying the model straight through the square mesh section which worked like a potato chipper. The result was quite spectacular and some time was spent gathering up the pieces in a plastic bin liner to take back home.

There were quite a few spectators but in his inimitable way Dave was able to just treat it as a huge joke.

This was just one of many stories but being with Dave always meant there was lots of laughs and friendly banter.

Miss you mate.
